After 6 months of planning MC^2, Rocky Vista University - Colorado Campus SNMA board including myself, Haseeb Chaudhry, Elizabeth Kuge and Ayush Adhikari partnered with Children’s Hospital of Denver and Denver Health to have 60 high school students from underserved communities come to partake in a full day of workshops including anatomy, suturing skills, airway management , mentorship, osteopathic manipulative medicine, and ultrasound/ EKG -in order to inspire and support their future goal of pursuing a career in medicine. The students even finished off their exciting day with a surprise white coat ceremony -and each of their names was embroidered on their own white coats ! It was one of the most rewarding experiences I have ever had as a medical student- getting to see the looks of inspiration and hope in the eyes of these students was an honor I can’t even put into words. As a minority in medicine myself and a first generation college student, I did not grow up with
a mentor in medicine easily accessible. Neither of my parents are in medicine and I didn’t have any close family friends who were doctors to mentor me on this journey and prepare me for what laid ahead. The goal of this program was to demonstrate to these students the absolute accessibility they have to their dreams and that the color of their skin or their socioeconomic status does not dictate the reality of their dreams. They can be whomever they want to be . I am proud to be a minority student and to be involved in such a fantastic club whose mission of increasing diversity will make such a difference in the future of medicine. I couldn’t have done it without my amazing team and the 80+ volunteers who gave their time to lead the workshops! We are the future of medicine and I am so proud to call you my classmates and future coworkers
